Featured Shop: Ideal Jewelry and Pawn in Atlanta, GA

In July of 2012, Alan Zager started Ideal Jewelry and Pawn to serve the Atlanta metropolitan area in the state of Georgia. Since opening they’ve become a Top Shop member of PawnGuru and have expanded to four storefronts in Gwinnett County.

Ideal Jewelry and Pawn has a strong interest in quality jewelry and firearms, and will offer top dollar for them.
“A lot of pawn shops in the immediate area, have no firearms,” said Paul Libman, manager at the shop. “But, we also like collectibles, modern electronics, and musical instruments.”

“Pawnbrokers should be careful to not embarrass or diminish the customer when explaining the true value of his or her item.”

The clientele are middle-class, but come from all ethnic backgrounds. To provide a welcoming atmosphere for all its customers, Ideal Jewelry and Pawn have a member on staff who speaks fluent Spanish to accommodate Hispanic and Latin customers.

For individuals who are new to pawn shops, Libman advice is that you know the amount you want to borrow or sell your item for. One way to accomplish this is by researching the used and new market value for your item.
“To have a general idea of its realistic value; that is probably the biggest issue,” Libman says. “Someone might come in and think their computer is worth $900 when it is really worth $200. It can be hard to do business when there is that much of a disparity.”
Also, Libman said pawnbrokers should be careful to not embarrass or diminish the customer when explaining the true value of his or her item.

Customers may not realize their options, as Libman said, “Often, you will find a customer who really wants to keep their item, but they think they get the most money by selling it.”

“We will make a loan of any size,” Libman said, “If someone wants a $50 loan, the customer is just as valuable to us as the one with a $10,000 loan.”

He says it is important for pawn shops to explain both options for customers. If it is for certain that they will not be coming back, then it is best they sell their item. For those who want to get back their item should pawn.
“We will explain to the customer each time, ‘you do not have to sell if you do not want to,’” Libman said.

Ideal Jewelry and Pawn’s average loan is between $200-$250. They offer large loans as well, ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars.
“We will make a loan of any size,” Libman said, “If someone wants a $50 loan, the customer is just as valuable to us as the one with a $10,000 loan.”

One of the major benefits of PawnGuru is helping local pawn shops discover new customers in their local area. Once in the shop, pawnbrokers can negotiate and be more flexible to accommodate the needs of each customer.
“The idea is not to get them in here and then low-ball them,” Libman said. “It is to get them in here so we can get a true idea of what we can go on.”

Libman enjoys the pawnbroker profession, studying new and old electronics, and learning about antique firearms.

“Almost every day, I get to work and deal with the things I enjoy,” Libman said.

  1. I have a bunch of old jewelry that I don’t wear at all anymore. It is kind of a waste just letting it sit around like that and not be worn. Maybe is should look into taking it all into a pawn shop and see if I can get some money for it. http://www.skokiecash.com/
